Interviewing

The art to every interview is preparation ... and more preparation!

Preparing for an interview

Here are some questions to ask yourself about a potential job before you are at the interview:

1. How much do I know about the position I am being interviewed for?
2. What salary and working conditions am I willing to accept?
3. What information am I hoping to get out of this interview?
4. What information about myself is vital for my potential employer to know?

What Not To Do During an Interview

Avoid these common "interview mistakes":

  • Arriving late for the interview
  • Offering a poor or limp handshake
  • Arriving dishevelled or inappropriately dressed
  • Failing to maintain eye-contact with interviewer(s)
  • Speaking unfavourably of past or present employers
  • Not sitting up straight in your seat
  • Failing to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Coming to the interview unprepared
  • Showing no enthusiasm for the job
  • Failing to ask questions of the potential employer when called upon to do so
  • Answering the majority of questions with "yes" or "no"
  • Appearing desperate for a job
  • Failing to ask any questions
  • Presenting yourself as aggressive or superior

There are many books on job interviews at your local library. We recommend "Sweaty Palms” by H. Anthony Medley. This resource is currently available in the Military Family Resource Centre's Resource Library.
