Keynote Speaker
On September 23, 2007 at 2pm, Glenn Wakefield set sail from Victoria, British Columbia on Kim Chow, his Phil Rhodes designed Offshore 40 in an attempt to fulfill his life’s dream – to be the first person from North America to complete a single-handed, non-stop circumnavigation in a westerly direction - against the wind and currents. To chronicle his extraordinary journey and provide daily updates, his wife Marylou created a website www.kimchowaroundtheworld.com.
After 215 days non-stop and approximately 750 miles from Cape Horn, Glenn and Kim Chow were knocked down twice in a series of violent storms in the Southern Ocean and both suffered considerable damage. In the days that followed, Glenn would face the single most important decision of his voyage and his life while thousands of supporters around the world logged on to the website and held their breath.
What unfolded over the next three days was an extraordinary display of courage by a group of dedicated sailors motivated by a shared code of honour.
Join Glenn and Marylou at Pacific Women’s Day as Glenn recounts his incredible journey and hear about the wife's story from the homefront.
